The Banquet (??) has been described as a loose adaptation of Hamlet, it is a tale of fate and revenge set in the 10th century China. The Emperor, the Empress, the Crown Prince, the Minister and the General all have their own enemies they would like to finish off at a night banquet. What a chaos you can expect to see!
The new Emperor (Ge You) has usurped the throne by murdering the previous Emperor. He marries the Empress (Zhang Ziyi, ???), wife of the previous Emperor and stepmother to the Crown Prince (Daniel Wu).
However, the Empress also secretly plots the new Emperor’s death with the help of the the Crown Prince and the Chief Minister (Ma Jingwu). Yet the Prince and Minister each have their own plans for the throne, and, of course, so does the Emperor. All these intrigues are brought to a climax when the Emperor calls for a lavish banquet, where the murderous plans are set in motion…

The Banquet was directed by Feng Xiaogang who was born in Beijing. He began his career designing dance performances before teaching art design at the Beijing Television Art Centre. He worked as a production designer and screenwriter of several influential Chinese features and as a television director before establishing himself as one of China’s most successful contemporary directors. His feature films include Gone Forever with My Love (94), The Dream Factory (97), Be There or Be Square (98), A Sigh (00), Big Shot’s Funeral (02), Cell Phone (03), A World Without Thieves (04) and The Banquet (06).
