New Transportation at Singapore’s Sentosa Resort Island

November 21st, 2006 by Maria

Singapore’s Sentosa Resort Island is one of the best get-away places in South East Asia. Located just 15 minutes from the city, it is a unique blend of leisure and recreational facilities including family attractions, sea sports, golf as well as hotel accommodation and retreats.

To take Sentosa into the next gear of its redevelopment plans, their old monorail system has ceased operations since last year to make way for the new $140m Sentosa Express.

Sentosa Express

I am lucky enough to be able to get hold of some pictures showing this exciting and beautiful monorial. You are lucky too because I am sharing these with you! :)

Singapore monorail

Even though the system is not open yet, landscaping is already quite extensive. Nothing like real greenery to make a monorail pylon look pretty!

The 2.1 km long double track line will link the main island of Singapore and Sentosa Island, with gateway stations at Harbour Front MRT Station and Central Beach on Sentosa. The line will improve access to Sentosa Island from the southernmost tip of Singapore. The monorail route will have four stations. The Sentosa Express will be the first in the world to use the new Hitachi Small monorail system. The system was originally developed by Hitachi in Japan as a small, standard and cost-effective solution to the transportation needs of small to medium-sized cities.

The new flat-sided guideway is slightly wider than that of the track at Walt Disney World and Las Vegas Monorail. This stretch of track will undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful sections, as it crosses the beautiful Causeway Bridge to Sentosa Island.

Beach Station

Near the southernmost tip of continental Asia is Beach Station. A stylish roofline and lush landscaping help make this a wonderful looking transit facility.

Miss Blue

Say hello to Miss Blue! Isn’t she hot and sexy?! The Sentosa Express trains are a colorful assortment of two-car trains. Seen here is at the storage/maintenance facility and Miss Blue is sitting on a transfer track switch.

Miss Orange

Hello Miss Orange. Bright orange color combinations are like the hair colors of a blonde!

Miss Purple

Miss Purple looks pretty cool. But she doesn’t mind showing off her substantial car-to-car hardware. :)

Miss Green

Last but not least, let’s meet Miss Green. She looks a bit fierce, but I am sure it will be a nice ride on her!

The building of the new Sentosa Express is on track to bringing Sentosa Island into the 21st century. This new system is scheduled to operate by Jan of 2007 when it links to VivoCity across the water at the Harbour Front MRT station. So, make sure you mark your calendar to visit Singapore and try out their brand new Sentosa Express!
