  1. Matia Bryson, breast pump expert Says:

Sorry, but I always feel I must make a little correction to the statement that the Ameda Purely Yours is the only FDA approved breast pump. Technically, the breast pump itself has not been approved, but Ameda’s claims about the effectiveness of the Hygienikit. As it says on the Hollister website “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed and cleared the claim that the patented silicone diaphragm used in the Ameda HygieniKit milk collection system creates a barrier that protects both:
Collected breast milk from potential contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria that may be present in the pump and or kit tubing AND Pump and kit tubing from potential contaminants, such as virus and bacteria, that may be present in collected milk. The Ameda HygieniKit is the only breast milk collection system with FDA clearance to make this strong protective claim.” http://www.hollister.com/us/mbc/breastfeeding/resource/study.html. Ameda admits that the use of the Hygienikit may be most relevant for premature or ill infants. No one has done a study to suggest that infants fed on milk expressed by other brands of breast pumps are sicker. That said, there are other considerations mothers may have in purchasing a breast pump, suitability for daily or occasional use, comfort, convenience, features, price, ease of finding replacement parts, integration with bottle systems. In my opinion, I still say the Ameda Purely Yours is a great breast pump, usually sold at a great price, but the importance of the Hygienikit to the breast pump buyer is matter of personal preference.
