Maria Sharapova and Australian Open 2007
Australian Open 2007 was simply amazing especially the Women’s Singles final match between Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams.
Serena Williams had played only a few tournaments in 2006, with her last appearance at the U.S. Open. She lost there in the fourth round to Amelie Mauresmo in three sets but did not participate in any more tournaments again for the rest of the year. But, after giving her fans little reason for encouragement, she went out and won her first tournament in 2007, knocking out the crowd favorite and number one seed, Maria Sharapova!
Despite the loss to Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova returned to No. 1 in the rankings. “I’m excited to get to No. 1 and hopefully I can keep it for many weeks to come,” Sharapova said at a news conference after losing to Serena Williams. “At the end of the day, I reached the final of a grand slam in my first tournament of the year.”
