What side of your car is your gas tank located?

It doesn’t matter how long you have been driving… but I am sure you do not know this trick. The little gas pump icon that denotes the fuel gauge on your car’s dashboard has really interesting hidden meaning, and it’s really useful too!
Before we go further, one quick question first; what side of your car is your gas tank located? If you are anything like me, you probably can’t remember right away. My solution is to uncomfortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look. If you don’t do this in your own car you are most certainly have done it in a borrowed or rental car. Right or not?

Look at the gas gauge icon more clearly. The handle of the gas pump extends out on either the left or right side of the pump. Do you know that if your gas tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your gas tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right?!! What an amazing discovery!
Now please forward this page to all you know to share the world’s best kept auto secret with your friends as this is information is way too important to be kept a secret!

Where got people put their petrol kiosk upside down? Refer the pic on the left. Bad photoshop perhaps?
My tank is on the hand side but the handle is on the right. So, this best-kept-auto-secret is busted!!

I drive the Mercedes C of my parents. The gas gauge is not left to right/right to left but up and down. And I think there’s no gas tank on the roof or under the car

This ‘tip’ didn’t apply to my Honda or Lexus either. Wish it had though…I wanted to have a ’secret.’

All bull man… no such thing… but i would prefer such thing to be indicated in our car tho.. something car makers should look into

Well, I think this is officially busted, since my Mazda’s gas tank is on the left side of the car, and the icon has it on the right.
Maybe it’s actually the opposite of what Maria has written, since if the icon has it on the right, i have to drive to the right of the gas island in order to get the tank side (left) to the pump.

I’d delete this tip before further embarrassment ensues. It didn’t work on a U-Haul rental truck either.
Luckily my car actually implicitly states where the tank fill is.

Judging by the diagrams and everyone’s responses it would make more sense if it was the other way round.

i drive a toyota MR2. My gas indicator runs up and down, sooo…you should probably just delete this post

I got the same email and checked my van, and the gas tank is on the left yet the nozzle in the picture is on the right lol

What about cars where the gas tank is at the rear? My father in law still has one of those type of cars lmao

why is everybody pointing out their gas gauge is up and down? It has nothing to do with the GAS GAUGE. It’s the GAS ICON. Looks at the ICON and see which direction the gas pump is point to. That’s the side the gas door is on.

Hey.. juz so you guys know.. the image is different in different countries.
For some countries, beside the image, there will be a small triangle by the side. The triangle is the arrow indicating the side of your gas door.

On the Honda in particular, the clue is not what side the “hose” is on. The clue is the gas tank icon itself. If the gas tank picture is to the left of the fuel gauge, then you fuel on the left. If the picture is to the right of the gauge, then you fuel on the right.
