We are all too familiar with the story of Scrooge, a miser got visited by four ghosts whom warned him of impending misery after he dies if he didn’t change his selfish ways and his hatred for Christmas. And he has a overworked and poorly paid clerk, Bob Cratchit who has a very ill youngest son. The story went on and in the end he turned over a new leaf and secretly sent a turkey to Bob’s family and treats others with kindness and generously.

We might be not like Scrooge however honestly search our hearts we might have been selfish in one way or another. That’s why Christ came as a baby on Christmas day to save mankind from eternal woe.

This festival celebrates victory of Good over Evil and Light over Darkness to the Hindus. It is also the beginning of the Hindu New Year. The Hindus will clean their house, buy new clothes and
cook sumptious Hindu food to eat. This celebartion span for five days.

At the sighting of the new moon, the celebration begins. This auspicious occasion is greeted with great joy. Everyone will wear new clothes and the young will ask for forgiveness from their elders. Open house or invitation for relatives and friends to come to their house is normally practised. Plenty of traditional Malay delicacies are served during this festive season. Houses are thoroughly cleaned and decorated with the lighting of oil lamps. The first three days of celebration is more prominent and it goes on for a month.

Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year or Spring Festival commences on the first day of the first month of Chinese calendar and is the most important festival for the Chinese.

The Chinese will travel back to their hometowns to celebrate this auspicious festival which will last for fifteen days.  They will spend their money to purchase presents, decorations, food, and clothing for their families.  Every Chinese family cleans the house to sweep away bad luck to make way for good fortune as according to Chinese believe. On New Year’s Eve each family will gather together to have a feast.  Food eaten will be pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies.  During the festive season they will visit their relatives and friends.  It is customary for married couple to give ang-pou (red packet that contains money inside) to those children or those who are not married yet as a tradition.
According to Chinese mythology, a mythical beast called Nien would come on the first day to devour livestock, crops and villages especially children.  Initially to protect themselves, they would put food in front of their house and the Nien would eat it and not harm them.  At one time, the villages saw that the Nien would be frightened of a child wearing red. The villages take advantage of this weakness and hang red laterns and spring scrolls on windows and doors.  The villages also light firecrackers to scare away the Nien.  From that time on , the Nien never visit the village again.  The Nien was finally captured by Hongjun Laozu, a Toaist monk.
Normally the Chinese New Year festival would fall on January or February each year.  Well Chinese New year for this year will be on the 3rd and 4th of February.  Happy Chinese New Year folks!!! And happy feasting!!!

The lesson of the porcupine

In the coldest winter, many animals die because of the cold. But porcupines, seeing the situation, were smart enough to group together.  By doing so they covered themselves from the cold although their quills wounded each other. After a while they started distancing themselves from one another and they began to freeze. So they had to make a choice: accept the quills of their buddies or disappear from the face of this earth. Wisely, they decided to come back together. Living with the little wounds that were caused by the close relationship, they were able to survive the cold.

Moral of the story:

The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but is when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person’s good qualities.
